  1. Default Goldfish are Dying HELP!!!

Hi I bought a 5 gallon tank and 25 goldfish.

Its only been a week and 8 have died and more are dying!

Whats wrong I added the gravel, water warm to the touch then dumped the fish in.

I dont have a filter or an air pump yet but I plan on getting one in about a month. Is that too long?

I seen something about adding ammonia to the fish to help cycle it so Im going to see if we have some and Ill dump some of that in and see if that helps for now.

Please tell me if there is more I can do. Im new to fish.

    -This is your problem.

I am going to ignore my suspicion that you are a troll and respond to your question.

One goldfish of any variety is too much to keep in a 5 gallon tank. All your fish will die within the week if you do not rehome them

Adding ammonia now will do nothing but kill them faster.

This is what the lady at Petsmart sold me. Im sorry Im only 14 and Im not a troll or do I know what one is.

I had $30 from my birthday and wanted fish so my mom took me to Petsmart to get these but they arent doing well.

I do have ammonia but are you saying it will kill my fish faster?

Yes they are small like 1 inch. They fit fine.

The only thing you should do is take the remaining fish back. There is no possible way this can work out with those fish surviving. If you are serious about keeping fish you can get a betta after you get a filter and prepare your tank for one.

Read the following thread about cycling

Petsmart will take any pet back within 14 days of purchase.

Yep, they need to be rehome because:
    • Your tank is too small for them to even come close to their full size potential
    • Ammonia levels will be/ are way too high for your stocking level
    • Your tank is not yet cycled: more info here and here

Rehome your fish and then have us hlp you set up a successful tank

That person should be fired on the spot, good God. A five gallon shouldn't have 25 fish of ANY kind, even teeny tiny mini rasboras or ember tetras or something.

I usually hate telling people to give away fish or bring them back, but in this case, you HAVE to. Gold fish are very messy fish and the 17 that are left are swimming around in so much ammonia from their waste that I'm surprised more haven't died yet.

You need to get rid of them (give them away or bring them back to the store if you can), empty the tank and start over. You will need a filter and a heater (unless you want minnows), and some patience to cycle the tank.

Follow the links some others have posted and we will help you have an awesome little tank. :) Fish keeping takes lots of patience and learning.
