    Default Starting a Cichlid tank

    Hello all,

    I am starting a 35 gallon cichlid tank but I am torn about what kind of cichlids to chose. Convince me why African or Asian cichlids are the way to go. I have no experience with cichlids and could use some tips as well. I've done a bit of reading so I know what I'm getting into. I have had great success with my tropical community tank and I am very interested in taking up cichlids.

    Any help here would be awesome!

    Do you mean african and asian, or african and american? There are a few asian cichlids, but american (south american/central american) are much more common.

    In any case, 35 gallons is pretty small for most species of cichlids. You're probably looking at a dwarf cichlid species, like rams or kribs.
    300 gallon mega tank: build in progress
    75 gallon community tank: tetras, danios, corys, platies, otos, pearl gouramis, bristlenose pleco, assassin snails, red cherry shrimp, bamboo shrimp
    70 gallon growout tank: clown loaches, sailfin pleco
    60 gallon goldfish tank: fancy goldfish
    29 gallon frog tank / 10 gallon tadpole tank: 1 leopard frog, 1 tadpole
    10 gallon and 5.5 gallon betta tanks: 1 male betta each, sometimes snails

    In a 35 gal tank I wouldn't convince you to get Oscars, lol.
    I believe fish that size are best off in a 4' tank.

    I see. In all I read I never did see any minimum tank size recommendations. Perhaps I should reconsider. That is, after all, why I came to talk to the experts!
