no need to rush into fish just to keep your cycle going...some fish food or toss in a small piece of shrimp and that will keep it going just fine!

You are doing well in the planning and scoping things out - so no need to start rushing now...

Will be watching this thread to see how it comes along!
    Have fun!

Or read the Fishless Cycle link in my signature line and artificially add Ammonia straight up.
Just case you feel super anxious and want it done asap.

How long would I be able to sustain the bb on my filter media with only adding a little bit of food? If it will be fine for a day or 2 then I will pick up the the sponge tonight and get the water and filter into the tank later aswell.

I will be picking up fish either tomorrow or sunday. Id prefer to wait to sunday for the fish and shrimp possibly. Also going to buy my plants of ebay today. Cheap as chips.

Ps - would this thread be better suited in the journal section?
    Thanks.

You can cycle a tank for a long time using fish food. Just add a pinch every day and you will be fine until you figure out what fish you want. I have heard that fish food can get expensive if you use it to cycle with but I have not had that problem. I feed my tank with ~15 fish 1 small pinch of food a day and I have tones of food left. I have been using the same bottle of fish food since January and I have not even used 1/2 of it. It is an average sized bottle that cost me probably ~$4-5.

Just add a little bit every day and you will be fine and keep you cycle going.
Lots of tanks. Some tanks are planted. Fish include community and bettas.

    Thanks for that ldoer..
So I now have the tank filled, cycled media in the filter which is now in the tank running nicely. Heater also in there and ive a tiny bit of food so hopefully that will keep it going nicely.

Ive also found another large specialised tropical store that I go to tomorrow. If they have anything that I like then we will be in business..

    Steady progress

Take it step buy step. Do not rush into things like I did. I set my tank up in may and am still cycling it. I rushed into it, added 15 good sized fish and most of them died. I have had tones of deaths in my tank because I did not do the research before hand. I found this sight buy accident and it has helped me a lot. It is a process to set up and maintain a tank. It is not cheep.

If you want a hardy fish you should try Platys. They come in all sorts of colors and patterns and are a lot of fun. I have 6 adults in my tank along with 5 of their babies. I love them so much. No two of mine look the same. They have survived a lot of my beginner mistakes. They are also cheep.

You can use fish food to keep your bb alive, but I wouldn't, personally. Depending on the quality of fish food, you could also be adding phosphates to your tank, which may give you algae problems later.

I would use ammonia or a piece of shrimp, as suggested earlier. You can keep your BB alive indefinitely that way.

they are some of the most deadly fish out there, razor sharp teeth, the ones that co-exist in a community tank simply don't realize that they can kill everybody around if they actually tried to lol
