  1. Default Do You Quarantine Shrimp?.....

    So I'd been interested in getting 1-2 peppermint shrimp, or maybe ghost shrimp from my LFS. What is the main difference, asides type, in the opinion of members?

    I would also be getting 1-2 more guppies at the same time, and would it be best to also quarantine the shrimp with the guppys?

    I am cautious about adding anything, as I recently had quite the issues with my tank, but doing my research first is a step in the right direction.

    Thanks in advance.

    This is a non-issue for you in this case - getting guppies requires that they be quarantined anyway so the shrimp might as well.

    While shrimp could never pass their own illness to fish - they could be carries of fish illnesses without getting sick/showing any signs (also, ick could hitch a ride.) So, in my opinion, I'd follow SOP's.
    Knowledge is fun(damental)

    A 75 gal with eight Discus, fake plants, and a lot of wood also with sand substrate. Clean up crew is fifteen Sterba's Corys. Filters: canister w/UV, in-tank algae scrubber that removes phosphates and nitrates! Also, a highly dangerous commercial nitrate removal unit from hell

    Never hurts to QT but my latest shrimp arrivals were for their own tank so I did not bother with QT.

    Um, How much research did you do LOL? {You may be referring to another shrimp variety but . .}

    I ask because the MAIN dif I see is that the peppermints are MARINE shrimp so they are not likely to enjoy the guppys environment much at all. . . Just saying.

    If your LFS will sell you peppermint shrimp for a guppy tank, Shop elsewhere stat. Please.

    Thanks 850R and Cermet for the quick responses!

    Yes, lol peppermints are not suitable! Cherry shrimp- I meant those reddish ones! Are they "easy" in terms of keeping alive?

    I will I guess put the shrimp in quarantine as well, I guess it wouldn't hurt.

    Keep an eye on the guppies with the Cherry shrimp. I used a pair of male guppies to break in my 10 gallon tank. The filter pad had come out of another established tank and I wanted to keep the BB fed while I shopped for my shrimp. I figured the guppies were small enough and fed enough that they would leave my shrimp alone. I added the shrimp a few days after the guppies had lived in the tank and the pair of guppies went after the RCS like they were shrimp pellets. I quickly moved the guppies into my daughters 3 gallon tank. All I'm saying is be careful, shrimp can be expensive.
    Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..
