Thread: Giant Gourami

  1. Default Giant Gourami

Has any one had a giant Gourami. I have had about every other type. Would like to try a giant. I have a 180 gal tank that he/she could go in. What do you all think. The LFS can order me one.

Giant gourami grow to a very bulky 2ft...a 180G tank is minimal for one. I would personally suggest you plan for down the road upgrading to a ~300ish gallon tank which is 8ft long and 30" wide with atleast a 2ft debth. Otherwise they are awesome fish, they are best kept with large cichlids and the like as many of them have a nasty temperment toward other fish.

I think I will get one. How soon will I need that 300 gal tank. I have to use the 180 gal tank. My wife said it has been empty for a year now. And if I don't use it soon she will try her hand at setting it up. If she does that i will end up with a 180 gal goldfish tank. can not let that happen.

Mine had grown from a three inch fish into a fourteen inch fish in six months. That was on a diet if frozen/thawed peas and carrots ,hihari spirulina wafers and cichlid pellets, raw table shrimp, scallops.Tankmates were two bichers, and a marble achara catfish. It eventually killed most everything i put in the tank except the catfish which the gourami could not fit into the LAIR.Fast schooling fish would be a good tankmate as the giants are not fish eaters, giant danio's,large rainbows, medium to large barbs, and tetras.

I never had a giant gourami but I had 2 snakeskins that got to be about 10-12 inches long each. They were a REAL handful constantly jumping out of the tank during feedings and splashing around. Fun to watch though.
