you can either stick the stem in the substrate, or let it float. It'll do fine either way and it grows fast. It should do fine in most lighting conditions. In my tank the old growth tends to die off, but you can just cut the stem, throw away the old bottom stuff, and stick the top of the stem back in the ground to keep growing again.

is this hornwort? i bought some like 2 weeks ago and it allready had 4 stems up to the top of my tank. so i trimmed those off and floated it. they are a great plant.
    CAUTION!!!!!
this plant holds on to snail eggs like glue. i had a blow up of at least 15 snails but my gourami ate them all :)

no, hornwort is a different plant. Anacharis is also known as Elodea.

I have anacharis. I can get it in a bunch at a Petsmart near me - it grows really fast - I used to let it float but recently stuck it into my gravel - it travels all over the tank. I might get another bunch soon to fill in areas in the back of my tank. They also have something called "mondo grass" there but it slowly died on me.

That's probably because mondo grass isn't an aquatic plant, much like many of the plants they sell at petsmart.

They keep the mondo grass in the same tank as the anacharis so I assumed it was ok - perhaps it dies on them too and they just remove the dead ones so it sells lol

Yea they trick a lot of people that way. Like I said, they sell several plants that shouldn't be kept submerged long-term.

I know - they sell those plants in tubes - umbrella plants, peacock ferns - they all say "semi-aquatic" - guess those plants are good for terrariums. The last time I bought anacharis the employee asked "Are you buying this for fish food?" I thought is this guy for real? lol
