A biofilter is simply a filter media that removes something specific out of water, like Phosphorus for example. An example of a biofilter would be a bag of a granulated Phosphate removal product. Most are iron oxide pellets.

A microfilter filters out certain types of microorganisms, like bacteria. Water is forced through a specific kind of membrane. Better models remove all but viruses. An Ultraviolet Sterilizer can remove more microorganisms than a microfilter, but there are portable microfilters. I have one in my camping supplies to make stream water drinkable.

Aprox. how long does it take for the new filter to cycle before I can move the HOB filter to a new tank. Thanks for the help

About six weeks, but you'd need to keep the bacteria fed with household ammonia until that new tank is fully cycled, since the bacteria are injured when moved from tank to tank.

dave, what you are referring to is actually chemical filtration used to remove various specifics; ie, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate remover. I think the biofiltration in question is asking for the best way to house a beneficial bacteria colony.
