about a year, approx. but it will depend on what you feed. how much you feed. how big the tank is to. how clean you keep the tank to.

My husbands oscars were purchased in February, right after Valentines Day at about 2 " and are probably 5" not including tail fin----6" with it. They looked so funny being in that large tank when he bought them! They are fed a VERY varied diet, but it doesn't contain much live food. I have several tanks with various types of fish so I give something different every morning along the frozen line, and they get the leftovers which really makes them love Mom! He gives them a staple diet including cichlid flake, sticks and dried shrimp and occasionally beefheart or cichlid delight.

Yea, they seem to be happy Rollie! All of my fish love the meaty frozen foods, but too much isn't good for alot of them so Bubba & Gump get tasty little treats from me every morning!

The only animal (2 legged and 4 legged also mind you) not spoiled in this house is the food obsessed golden retriever, Naya. If she gets overweight she gets joint pain and we had to have her on rimadyl for awhile, not good. She constantly looks for food and tries to make us feel bad, but because of a growth condition as a puppy she has a weak joints and thus can't walk if she gets chubby.
