Thread: mbuna questions

  1. Default mbuna questions

i've being wanting to start a mbuna tank and was just wondering how many I could put in a 90 gallon and what would be the best route to go decor wise any advice will be welcome

  2. Default

Crushed coral for pH, i use lava rocks that form plenty of caves, I dont mess around with plants because they'll end up uprooting them all. And as far as stocking it, they can get pretty big and some can grow fast. Good luck.

A 90g would comfortably hold 25-30 adult sized mbuna. Best decor is lots of caves, tunnels, and breaks in line of sight. Texas holey rock is great for scaping a mbuna tank. I'd put the rocks on egg crate and then add substrate as mbuna like to dig and if you put the rocks onto substrate there is a chance of collapse when the digging commences.

i stocked my tank with resin rock ornaments because of weight concerns but it was stocked floor almost to surface. these fish like lots of structure. as for stocking density, lab rat recomends 25-30 fish. i think thats too many for a 90 i prefer around 12 fish for that size tank because less bioload makes it easier to maintain good water quality. however, lab rat has more experience than me
