75 gal tank help with fish selection
Hi
Tomorrow I will be getting my first 75 gal freshwater tank if I could fit it in the car! I can't wait, I just need to figure out what type of fish to keep in it. Also I want to use sand instead of gravel but I'm not to sure yet which would be best. At the moment I have a fluval edge 6 gal with a few fish but its to small and I have the space for a larger tank.
I want a large colorful community tank. I'm in the process of making a list, but I have the following so far.
You guys are the experts here. Any suggestion?
Thanks everyone!
15 neon tetras
5 corydoras catfish
1Peppermint Bristlenose

I personally like gouramis. My Opalines are very sweet. They are also beautiful. No 2 look the exact same. I have 1 male and 2 females in my tank and have had no problems when I introduce new fish. They are very hardy, so they can help you cycle your tank.
If you want a Loach get Clown Loaches. They have a lot of personalities. I have heard that they get big and need groups though. So if you got them I would get 5 of them. They grow slowly. They really are clowns.
Tomorrow I will be getting Playties (Cant spell) for my tank. They will provide some live food for the gouramies. I will also not have to spend more $ on new fish.
Live bearers are always great community fish. Just make sure that you get a ratio of at least 1:2 (males to females).
Tetras tend to be not very hardy fish so I would introduce them later on once the tank has been set up and cycled for a few months.
Hope this helps.Lots of tanks. Some tanks are planted. Fish include community and bettas.

Forgot something. The Cories at Petco seem to be very active and they do best in groups. From what I have seen they have personality, which buy this point in time I am sure that you realize that I like. They look like fun to me.
If you go with a dark substrate the Albino Cories would look really nice.
Just my thoughts. I in the fish section of Petco 2-4 times per week looking stuff up. There is an expert fish keeper there who really knows his stuff.Lots of tanks. Some tanks are planted. Fish include community and bettas.

I know what I would do but probably not what you would like. With a tank that size, I would go South American cichlids, but I have a thing for blood parrots and severums. Never had the severums yet but blood parrots do great with other community fish.
55 gallon is all that would fit in my car. The 75 was too wide. *sobCycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

What about some emerald corys, congo tetras, and a blue acara

Hi well guess what, the 75 gal did not fit in the car I purchase the 55 gal. Pretty happy can't wait. I also purchase the sand. Setting up tonight. To start the cycling process. The sand would probably take a few days to settle I think. I have this fish atlas book that I had at work it a huge book with tons of info on almost every fish and I'm checking out the fish you all suggested. Really enjoying this!

Hi,
So I decided on the following fish for my 55 gal tank:
Is this to many fish for my 55 gal?
Let me know if this sounds good.
2 clown loaches
2 Bosesmani rainbow fish
6 cardinal tetras
6 zebra daino fish
1 sterba's cory
4 topsail platy

Loose the clown loaches, they need a group of 6+ and do grow to an excess of 10" although they do grow very slowly.
I would go for the following:
8 Boesemani Rainbows
12 Cardinal Tetras
12 Zebra Danios
8 Sterba Cories
4 Platies
1 Angelfish
2 BN Plecos
You may be in shell shock from the numbers but the fish you are keeping are primarily small low bioload species with the exception of the Plecos and Angelfish. Boes only hit about 3.5" tops and IME dont have a huge bioload.
Did you end up with a 55G instead of the 75G? If so you may wanted to reduce the numbers by a few...but otherwise I would keep about the same stock.150G SA Cichlids|100G Planted Community|50G Reef|20G Tanganyikan|10G Divided Bettas|10G Nano Fish

I agree totally with Jenns selection altho I'm not a lover of danio's. I would probably get neon rainbows instead, all males. But if you like the danio, then go with that.
Make sure you cycle the tank first.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••
