Using pillow stuffing in filters
I bought a bag of this stuff from Walmart, now do or should I use the ceramic bio material also or is the sponge and pillow stuffing in the aquaclear filters enough to provide sufficient filtration?
1--29 gallon tank: 1 small angelfish, pygmy cory, and 4 baby albino bristlenose.
2--55 gallon tank: 1 adult angelfish, 7 black skirt tetras, 5 yo yo loaches, 1 synodontis catfish and 1 spotted raphael.
3--3 gallon tank with female betta.

You want the ceramic media to house your nitrifying bacteria.
You want the pillow stuffing to filter out the crud. It will also house bacteria, but that's not what it's best at.
The sponge acts equally well as both housing and crud-filter.55 g Goldfish Tank - 5 Fancies, 2 Dojos

So if I put a sponge, ceramic media and the pillow stuffing on top then this would be a better filtration than just having sponge on bottom and the ceramic rings on top? Then the only thing that would really need to be replaced would be the ceramic rings?

Might to light and floaty on top and you may need to weight it with the bio max but try it and see what works for ya.

That stuff is a wonder material for filter media. It works for all applications and is just as good as any bio media. That is the stuff I keep in my filters when I want to have preseeded bio media for a new tank. As LH states, weight it down with something or simply place it under your biorings.
