Thread: Pups on the way

  1. Default Pups on the way

To make a very long story, not quiet as long...
We have a rescue pomeranian that we assumed was fixed..like most rescue are when they put them up for adoption. Now she is with pups.

About a month ago, this cute little yorkie, or Australian terror mix, wonders up in our neighborhood. What we didn't know for a few days is that he was sniffing out our dog who had been in heat and we didn't know it. He hung around a few days being timid, he was slightly emaciated, and would never let us get close to him....But then our dog started showing too much interest. Thats when realized maybe she was in heat and not fixed after all..so we ..you know..let em go at...

At that point we were able to access him and see how pitiful he was. We were able to wash him, get all the tick off him (He was covered!!!) and give him a little food. We put up flyers, took him to the vet to check for a chip..no chip, no word from anyone to claim him. We think he was abandoned or ran away. He has yet to leave our side and it the sweetest loving dog, slightly submissive, scared of car rides and maybe 1 year and half to 2 yrs old. He is house broken except for the territory marking..and stays in a crate while we are at work.

All that to say..Our Pomeranian is probably going to give birth while we are on vacation, so we are not taking her. We have thought about boarding her at the vet's office, or leaving her at home and let nature take care of itself and have our neighbor check in on her daily. We have never had a dog that had pups before, so all this will be knew to us and really don't know what to expect.

The Pom's temperament is very, very submissive, a nervous tinkler and very skiddish, we think she might have been mistreated before we adopted her. That being said, I'm not sure if boarding her would completely stress her out and make birthing more difficult or not.

Does anyone have any tips for making her comfortable and getting ready for pups?

    "Porkies"... that's hilarious

Kudos to you for taking in not one but 2 friends for life...the love they will show your family is unconditional

I think i may leave them both at home, if you have a neighbor who can look after them

    Congrats on the pups!

He is adorable. Congrats on the pups. I agree with Slap about leaving them at home and having neighbor check on them. Especially with them both being nervous and skittish to begin with. I would make sure they are familiar with whomever will be caring for them before you go on vacation so they won't freak out when that person comes over to care for them. And now that you have our interest, you know we will want to see pics of momma pup and the porkies. :)

When you talk about your neighbor "checking in" I assume you mean they will be feeding, walking, spending time with them? I would also be a little more prepared than that. Anything can go wrong, especially with smaller dogs.

Have a conversation with your vet about the possibility of your neighbor having to bring the dog in in case of an emergency, to be billed to you. Make sure your neighbor knows about any after hours emergency place and have a talk with them also - just in case. You don't want to take a chance on losing her if something goes badly.

I bred (planned - on purpose) a West Highland Terrier years ago and everything went fine. But she started at around 3:00 am and didn't have her 6th and last pup until after 8:00 am. But I had a stray cat I took in who also became pregnant. When she was ready, she had a lot of difficulty. It was after normal hours, but I rushed by my vet just in case someone was there and I got lucky. She was there for hours, and he had to give her meds a few times to help things along. He was just about ready for a C-section, when she finally had one kitten. Two others didn't make it.

Just suggesting that you have a plan, in case it's needed. Hopefully she'll be just fine and those pups will be adorable. Maybe she'll even wait until you return.
