  1. Default API water test kit

starting my fishless cycle now, using store bought ammonia w/o detergents or perfumes, while reading the instructions for the different tests i noticed in the ammonia and nitrAte instuctions it says "the freshwater ammonia/nitrAte test color chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added." it says nothing about this in the nitrIte and ph instruction procedures, i have added no salt yet, are my readings still accurate

Since it's a freshwater test kit, I think they are saying that using that color chart is also okay if you've added salt to your tank, since a lot of aquarists do. I don't think they mean you can't use it if there is no salt in your tank. I use mine all the time, and I never salt my tank.

The reason that they specify that on the ammonia and nitrate cards is because there is a separate set of cards for the saltwater test kit. The nitrite color card, however, is the same for both fresh- and saltwater which is why it doesn't mention it.
