Murphy was really on a roll today...

Last night my glasses fell off the dresser, and as I was going over to pick them up I lost my balance and landed on top of them... Twisted the frames and popped a lens. Didn't break the lens, thankfully.

Got woken up suddenly by something after less than two hours of sleep, and never managed to get back to sleep. I was a zombie this morning. Then, around 6:20am, I discovered that my seatbelt had gotten caught in the car door and kept it from closing properly after my run to the gas styation last night. So the dome light was on all freaking night.

Thankfully, I got my glasses fixed without too much hassle (thank goodness for backup pairs, though), and the car battery, thank Primus, was NOT dead. I got to my morning class just fine, then afterward I sent out the money order for my plush pleco. Came home after that and crawled into bed for a nap. Ended up sleeping all afternoon, through my alarm and my evening class.

It's just been one of "those days"

Working from home today...debating whether or not to drive in to the city for a company dinner tonight. Might be fun...(or not). But at least I won't have to cook!

Went into town today and refilled little RootBeer's prescription. He's a precious little kitty, and I want to make sure he always has enough of his medication.

Of course, I stopped by our local pet place/garden center and couldn't help purchasing some plastic aquarium plants.

BIL took my stand for the 65g home with him to work on.

Enough snow has finally vanished from my huge flower garden so I could walk up there and look things over. Am going to have to re-hammer in some of the edging which was heaved up during the winter freeze/thaw cycle. I have to do that every Spring.

I'm seeing the merest hint of crocus shoots emerging out of the ground.

We live at an elevation of 3200 feet, so everything returns a lot later up here.

Of course, when the ground dries out more, I'll be trimming off last year's spent growth from the perennials so the new growth underneath can fully benefit from the sun.

Lots of work, and always something inside of me that loves doing it every year.

Neighbors driving along our road often pull into our driveway and admire my garden when it's in full bloom. They get as much enjoyment out of it as I do, and that's very worthwhile for me!

    Ah yes, looking forward ...

My sister came down from Halifax with one of her friends... We're swapping cars with mom tomorrow and heading out to the country to A) check on the bungalow, and B) go to the wildlife park. I will be bringing my camera, so expect a picture thread when we get back XD

We will be doing some baking tonight (our cure for boredom is baking stuff; on a really slow day we have cakes and cupcakes everywhere), my computer will be mobbed till it coughs up the code for my wireless, and bettas will be poofing at everybody they don't know.

^_^ I also posted a new pic of my progress on the goldfish pillow project

Did go...and had fun - at the banquet...last night. Food was good, but uninspired. I like sit-down meals better than buffets...but still, this one was just totally unmemorable...

Tonight I have quartet rehearsal. Last time we discussed playing something for the teacher's recital at the end of the semester.

A 5-year old playing the violin badly is cute.

Four 45-65 year olds playing the violin/viola badly is not so cute.

...but even so, I suppose it would be good for us...

I'll see what the others have decided...I'm fine either way...

It's snowing -- AGAIN !!! I'm getting really tired of this stuff! Just when the ground clears enough that I can visit my wintered-over garden (yesterday), it turns around and snows again to cover it all up.

This is going to be a wetter and colder Spring than the one in 2000. We thought it would NEVER warm up, then, with daytime temperatures languishing in the 30s for weeks at a time.

Well, we did have a mild winter earlier in the year, so maybe this is make-up time?

Not much doing right now. Puttering around the house. Fed the fish this morning.

It finally quit snowing, and it's all gone from the garden, again.

I changed about 45% of the water in my coldwater tank, and took out the mermaid, as the paint started to blister and flake off it (see my thread in the general aquarium forum). I just hope it isn't lead-based. If it was made in this country, it's probably safe. In China -- who knows?

Gave Rootbeer his medicated food and refreshed his water. Scooped my cats' litter.

Hubby is out of town again, so I'm just puttering around here. His mother has rentals in Lewiston, and I told him I'm not going down there again until I can bring home my tank. Next trip, hopefully! He took his small truck, the bed of which is loaded with stuff, so no room for it this time.

Once I get it home and the stand gets fixed, then it's set-up time, and away we go! Really looking forward to it!

    More later ...

We didn't get to the wildlife park... We were on our way, but they closed earlier than we anticipated, so by the time we reached the place we didn't have enough time to walk the animal trail. Instead we headed out to the bungalow... Too much snow on the driveway for the car to get through now that the studded tires are off, so we walked in. On the way back we saw fresh deer tracks in the snow. And the car got stuck in 4 inches of white stuff ><

My son worked until 11 p.m. last night. Hubby and I sat and waited for 2 hours after I was done rehearsal.

Today...I hope...will be a nice, quiet, stay at home and get housework done day. Hubby rented 2 movies and didn't get them for long enough...so we have to watch them tonight (fine by me...)...

Was sitting out on the butterfly bench overlooking my just-barely-waking-up flower garden, breathing in the Spring and all its renewing qualities. Taking mental notes of what I need to do to get it back into shape as it progresses.

Each year, I cut the old growth off the catmint, as the new shoots poke through it. Ditto for any snapdragons that survive the winter. Some do, some don't.

Ditto for the veronica and dill bush -- all the old growth gets cut off as the new rises from the roots.

The same for the bearded irises and the columbine.

I love columbine, especially the two-toned colors. I like the single flowers; am not fond of the new double varieties they have out. Unfortuantely, deer will eat columbine, and that's one of the few items I refuse to dispense with, because I really like their flowers.

I've long since given up on hollyhocks, as much as I love those. I've caught deer in the act of stripping every bud, blossom and leaf off them and leaving me with nothing but barren, seven-foot high stems! They just won't leave them alone.

Ditto for daylilies and Asiatic lilies. No sooner do they bud than the deer will eat the buds right off them. I no longer bother with them.

Instead, I heavily planted alliums, leucojums, foxglove and other flowers the deer generally avoid. I also found volunteer poison hemlock that grew wild in my garden last year. If the deer are smart at all, they won't touch that, either!

Hemlock closely resembles Queen Annes Lace. I compared images of the two, and I'm certain I've got hemlock. I look at it as a natural deer deterrant. No kids here, so no danger of accidental poisoning. The adults know better.

I know to always wear gloves whenever I touch the stuff, and even then, to wash my hands thoroughly afterward. And I only touch it if I wish to transplant it, or to trim off branches that fade.

Rarely will deer eat daffodils, but one year, they did. Nothing is 100% deer-proof, if the deer are hungry enough. Tulips are another matter. They'll eat those down to nothing, so I don't grow them, anymore. If I want tulips, I'll "plant" artificial ones.

Over the years, I've learned what works and what doesn't. Since I can't keep deer out of my garden, I now make their menu very limited and the overall cuisine unattractive to them.

I'm still tempted to try one of those solar powered noise deterrants advertised by Bell and Howell. Just as an extra measure. What I DON'T want is to discourage little birds from foraging or nesting in nearby trees. Maybe if we want some wildlife, we have to resign ourselves to accepting it all.

A lot of work goes into my flower garden, and I hate to see it decimated, but more and more I am learning that just comes with the package of living out here, and try to deal with it as best I can, without really hurting anything.

Not much else, right now ...
