What eel?
Ok this is planning way ahead. After I upgrade my clown loaches from a 120 to anything bigger, I'll have an empty120. I want an eel and saltwater eels look cooler. What eel do you recommend? Would I need a sump?(gallons)

A fish only tank is a lot easier. Live rock is the best basis for your bio filtration, in both reef tanks and in fish only tanks. IMO, you should have live rock for either type of set-up
Do you think that you could want corals in the future or not. If not, you could get almost any type of eel that would be suitable for a 120 gallon tank.
The best advise I can give you is to first research what is required of a healthy salt water tank before you even start thinking about stocking it. There are a lot of differences between SW and FW that you will need to understand before getting started.
I'm not trying to talk you out of a SW tank in any way, I just don't want to see you disappointed by your first SW tank. I'm only trying to help and make sure your set SW tank is a good one.Last edited by Cliff; 02-01-2011 at 06:46 PM.

patience bud haha not a lot of people here know a lot about sw eels haha
Anyways live rock is necessary for a sw tank, and if you wish to have any saltwater animal a lot of work goes into it, it's more about how well you can keep ur water parameters since things in sw are more sensitive than fw (very blanket statement)
As far as what kind of eel I really don't know what to tell you about that haha I've never looked into it...
But I'd suggest "The New Marine Aquarium" by Michael Paletta
It's a great book that'll let you know what you're getting into and it has a couple eel species that the author talks about and whether they're suitible for a various sized tank55g Long --> After 18mo of doing well the tank crashed during moving. Most likely cause: Flatworm Die-off... won't start another until after moving... Likely not until late 2013
Check out the journal to follow my 55g SW tank

fish only is easier, you can put eels in a reef but they will eat some fish ,but mostly crusteceans.Certain eels will work in with corals.Reef tanks with corals and shrimp, stars, urchins, crabs, anenomes, are alot of work for a beginner.Because of lighting, trace elements, different animals, food requirements,so on and so forth.UV sterilizers, sumps, protien skimmers ,that is a few things that MAY be needed.
