i have a ceratophrys ornata. last month he started getting bloated. turns out he managed to break a piece of pottery i had in there for him and ingested a small piece of it, impacting him. the reason i think thats what impacted him is because right after i noticed it was broken up he stopped using the bathroom. well long story short whatever he is impacted on started pushing against his spine, and for now he is paralyzed from the waste down for the time being. if he passes it ive been told theres a good chance he may return to normal with hind leg function.

im going to try the olive oil trick and hopefully it helps him pass it. he gets a 20min soak in 88 degree water daily to also help (hasnt done much...). hoping the olive oil in conjunction with warm water does the trick. if not i fear hes going to be entering kidney failure within a week. its been depressing me lately so i figured ide post here to see if anyone has any experience with a situation like this and any ideas as to what may help me out

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

sorry it took so long to respond thank you everyone for your support. for some reason this thread wasnt showing up for me. update (kindof) olive oil has not helped yet, still keeping up the soaking routine. he has next to no appetite and hasent eaten solid "food" in about 3 weeks. i have given him a homemade formula feed through a syringe so keep him from just starving and wasting away. about a week ago he started to look like he was getting better but now hes back to where he was. he is starting to retain water, and i believe his kidneys are failing. i have someone coming to look at him in two days, but im afraid i already know what the verdict is going to be

Sometimes you do the best you can and it just isnt enough. There might be something that you dont know going on. It might be time to think about if he is suffering or not...

I don't have experience with turtles, but I do with dogs.

My dog trainer told me once that if a dog swallows something sharp, to take cotton balls and soak them in heavy cream (you can them keep them in the freezer in a plastic bag). If you can, you then get the dog to eat the cream-soaked cotton balls to pad whatever's been swallowed and prevent it from perforating the esophagus or intestines. It should also create bulk to help pass whatever's been ingested. However, if he's that badly impacted, I doubt he's going to pass the blockage on his own. I sincerely hope he does, though. :-(

    *hugs*

hes not a turtle lotus, hes a frog and tank you for the laugh!
im doing alright. he actually passed a little bit today, so the olive oil worked kindof for me. im afraid its too late though. im having him looked at tomorrow (weather permitting) just to be 100% sure but i am almost certain his kidneys are failing. it looks like it may be getting close to let him peacefully rest.

im staying positive though its just though as he is only a year and a half to two old. worst part is i take these things hard and it just feels like its my fault.

hes my second amphibian pet, my first was an american toad that i had for 11 years who succumbed to old age
