  1. Smile wen growth...odd question

I have heard from lots of people & read that when orandas/ranchu's/ lionhead goldfish have a 'wen growth spurt' it looks like white spots, almost like fungus & then falls off showing off a new little bit of wen growth.

    my odd question:
Is this the only way the wen/hood grows?
I've had my 2 oranda's since september & i swear their wen is a little bigger - but i've never seen any white bumps.

ps: for orandas is it called a wen or a hood or does it matter all that much?

I think gradual slow growth doesn't have to have the white spots. I've never seen the spots "fall off"... they seem to just go away.

And it is called a wen, regardless of the shape, size or breed.

LOL obviously i haven't seen this happen before to use the term 'fall off'...good to know they don't fall off!

humm so maybe i have super slow growing wen on my orandas?

Perhaps. I would weigh your fish, and then feed them 3-5% of their body weight every day.

Mine weigh 20-30 grams each, so I need to feed about 4-5 grams a day. It is a lot of food once you measure it :P

oh hey now thats an idea...since im always wondering if im giving enough food or not

where do i get a scale that will be that sensitive?
    a kitchen store?

& im no math wiz by any means so how do i figure out the % to feed them once i know the weight...& spread that out for 5 goldies

Weigh all 5. Input the amount into a calculator, multiply by 0.05

the number i end up with is the weight of food i should use?

if so is it same for flakes & pellets?

The number you get is the amount of food you feed per day. I prefer pellets.

    ohhhh thanks!

Well my fish weight between 8-43grams!! quite a diff!!!!

    So I added their combined weight (14,13,43,20,8) & got 98...then i multiply that # by 0.05 & got 4.9

Does that mean 4.9 grams of food? am i supposed to divide, cuz thats a crazy amount of food - even spread out over a day!

but i have to say getting their weight is not something i ever thought of & its cool to have a record of it!

& your suggestion was to feed 3-5% of their body weight, how would i figure out the amount if i wanted to feed 1.5-2% or something like that?

**never mind the "divide" comment!! i just did & the number is worse LOL
    so 4.9grams?????????

with that much food in a day my fish would be belly up in a few days LOL!!!
How in the world do u feed 4-5grams?
I must be getting this wrong?
