The Beast - Update w/ pics
Well...I decided to take a few shots of this monster tonight. He is just over a year old and already pushing 11-12 inches (I Bought him when he was under an inch). He has ALOT more blue/purple than the photos show, but I'm having a hard time picking it up on my coolpix. The D5000 shows his color great, but I'm not thrilled with my overall quality yet. Anyway...Here he is!

Thanks!
I'm surprised at how fast he is growing. My old male Dovii was three years old (before he passed) and only a little larger than this one is now. This one is an F1 and comes from a great bloodline...Maybe that makes a difference? I was unsure of the origin of my last one as he was an lfs pick-up (still a beautiful fish though). Either way...I'm lovin this guy!-Jordan

If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Nice fish, I want one!
How did you get into gars?
I once caught a long nose gar in the river by my house, he was about 7-8 inches long. That fish was so bizarre looking, snake like with a big mouth full of teeth. Almost prehistoric looking.
I was thinking that would be cool to try and catch another one to keep in a tank. But then I thought I might have to feed it only live food and that would get spendy.

He's beautiful and a whopper at 1 yr. Goes to show how fast a healthy, well cared for fish like this will grow given the proper room. Nice job.

I went in to see it, fell in love and took it home. The fish turned out to be a Florida Gar and I have had him ever since.
Since then I have kept, rescued, and rehomed dozens of gars.
Thank you! I'm still amazed at how fast he has grown so far! I'd like to see this boy close in on the 20" mark, so i can give him the 180 all to himself!
