Best way to euthanize my fish?
Enough is enough. My poor Bolivian Ram isn't getting better so I'm going to have to euthanize him. This is the first time I've done this and I'm not looking forward to it at all. What is the easiest most humane way to euthanize a fish?
10 Gallon: Planted Red Cherry Shrimp
65 Gallon: Planted South American Community
30 Gallon: Planted Bolivian Ram Tank

Very sad, but when I get a fish that is suffering and I can't help I get a small container with aquarium water, put the fish in it and put it in the freezer.

if you can stomache it the fastest way is to wrap it in a paper towel and squash it.putting it in ice water is fairly quick as well.

Here's a website that i've looked at for my piranha's, i can't get anyone to take them, and i cannot take care of them well enough for them to have a good life, and when i work the pipeline i'm going to be gone for extended periods of time. It's sad, but no one will take them. And i dont want them to suffer.

knives also work. Personally I use the freezer method.
Sorry to hear that. Always hard knowing when to throw in the towel on fish.Who is "General Failure" and why is he reading my hard drive?

ice cold tap water, lots of ice, stir the ice into the water till the ice is gone as this should be around 34 degrees, put the fish in, swirl it a bit then pop it in the freezer. Within a few seconds the fish is dead, nerve twitch is common so dont be grossed out if it twitches or flops a bit. Mine havnt done this but its fairly common with the freezing method. It slips them into a slumber as it shuts down their metabolism, they pass out and never wake up.
Clove oil is instant however Im not one to palm a fish and make sure it coats its gills.

I've heard of the clove oil & vodka method...if u want to buy cheap vodka.
i've never done it.
put the fish in small container of tank water
mix a few drops of clove oil & tank water in a small cup
add the clove oil & water mix to the container with the fish
the clove oil will put the fish to sleep
then add vodka (i cant remember the amount) this lets the fish die...but it doesn't feel anything since its already alseep.
i can't remember the website..but if this method sounds good please look it up as i can't remember the exact amount of the clove oil & vodka & the time frame u should follow
sorry to hear about your ram

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I was getting ready to euthanize him but when I went in the room to get him, he had already died.
He was one of my favorite fish.

I'm sorry to hear about your sad discovery.
For future reference, I have done the clove oil method, only I applied the clove oil without the vodka--a BIG mistake.
You need some sort of solvent for the clove oil to break it apart and disperse it in the water, which alcohol does nicely--mine just lay in globs in the water without any alcohol, which the fish ate and then died, but it took much longer and was not humane at all.
Better luck with your replacement fishy.
