Thread: Cutting glass

  1. #1

    Default Cutting glass

I have a very old junk aquarium that I remembered I had in the attic. Looks like maybe a 50 gallon or so. The glass is 1/4". Is this tempered glass do you think?

I'm asking because the glass top on my 20 gallon long broke. Instead of paying for a new top I am wondering if I can use the glass from the junk aquarium and cut-to-fit?
    8 tanks running now:
    1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.

I think usually the bottom is tempered but not the sides.

Here is a link I found http://www.salt-city.org/showthread.php?t=9542 seems to be a cool little way to test the glass.

If that doesn't work, take a drill to the glass. If it shatters, it was tempered!

I just disassembled one of the panes and right on it it says "Ford...tempered safety glass." Probably should have looked first.

However, can tempered glass still be cut if I take it somewhere? Seems as though maybe it would still be less expensive to have someone cut it than order a new versa-top?

I dont see why you couldnt use it, but I think its gonna be pretty close cost wise unless you have a way to cut the glass yourself.

If it can't be cut a new piece of glass will be peanuts I would think. I had half of a new lid for a 120 gal cut and polished for under 20 bucks at a Speedy Auto Glass. That included the edges being polished.

Tempered glass is really hard to cut. It requires special equipment You'd be better off buying a new sheet of glass and having it cut
