Silicone Safety

I bought a used 55 gallon aquarium today, and some of the silicone sealer on one side is peeling off. When I was at Lowe's the other day, I grabbed a silicone that I thought I had read would be good for use inside and outside an aquarium: GE Premium Waterproof Silicone.

Does anyone have experience with this type? I am not sure I need it inside the tank, but if I do, would this one be safe?

I would really appreciate any information from anyone who has been there, done that.

I have not used that stuff before. I have used GE 1 silicone for doors and windows. GE has resently changed there labels so there’s s little confusion over which one is safe or not. As long as you are using a 100% pure silicone that have no mold inhibitors added, you will be safe. If you’re not sure, play it safe and spend a little extra to get the aquarium silicone from a LFS or order it from a pet-store on-line.

It’s a great tread that explains how to reseal a tank and shows a pic of the silicone that I have used to re-seal all of my tanks

Great post Cliff!
I also recommend getting a silicone that says aquarium safe on the label.
The "GE I" I believe have changed their formula and its now a different product.
Dap makes an aquarium specific silcone for aquariums now.There are also a few other brands that rea safe.
