This is gonna be a real dumb question, but what is the purpose of moss balls? Do you just leave them the way they are and they spread or stay the way they are? Or do you break them apart and spread them apart.

i have 5 now. they filter the water and gather debris that bottom feeders, especially shrimp, like to eat.

they grow, and when they get large you can take a knife or scalpel and split them in half, and have 2. then, those two become more when split, etc. they dont require extremely good light and are hard to kill.

EDIT- also, if you look on ebay, you can get good deals. here, superpet has them for 10$ each or 2 for 17, but ebay can have some 3 for 10$ CDN
