Default What to do, what to do...

    Well...I knew this might happen...

Since my kids are getting older and I have more time to get back to my own interests, and given the fun I'm having with Job (my 1 year old Catahoula X dog) I have joined the local kennel club.

So on top of training Job, I recently helped out at a dog show (Ring Steward for the obedience trials) and I am co-teaching the Beginner Puppy obedicence class (puppies! ).

I think I would like to trial again. But I can't do that with an unregistered or a cross-breed. I need a purebred dog. (You know what's coming!)

It wouldn't happen this year. I don't have time for another puppy at the moment and there's no way I'd have 5 dogs.

    Currently I have 4:

    Retriever, 13.5 years old
    American Bulldog, almost 5
    Mini Dachshund, almost 5
    Catahoula X, 1 year old

Part of the problem is finding a breed that I would really enjoy. I do have criteria:

Has to be recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club - which rules out a couple of my favourite breeds.

Has to be reasonably no bully breeds (also my favourites).

Can't need lots of grooming (I don't mind a quick brushing once a week, but that's about it).

Not too drooly, not too small, my favourite coat colour is merle...

In short - there's no breed that meets all my 'wants'.

Job won't be neglected at all...I want to train him as far as I can take him...I just can't ever trial him...

So, I'm just thinking. Am researching a couple of breeds that meet some of my criteria...

Just looking for ideas from my favourite opinionated people...

I trained and competed with a female PitBull when I was in my teens, it was a bit more effort to train her than other breeds but once she thought she wanted to do agility it was cake. For bully breeds you just have to convince them they want to do it, so make it as fun as possible. I wouldnt rule them out completely due to the fact they are stubborn, they need a job and need to please their people. Honestly I would look into some of them...they fit your criteria for grooming and size...drooling well, some are worse than others. Not sure how large you are willing to go, but a Cane Corso may be a good option. They are extremely devoted to their person, they are also very trainable and intelligent dogs.

The AKC just started allowing mixed breeds to compete in performance events. I wonder if the CKC will follow suit?

Dang, you already ruled out my favorite which would have been a long haired miniature dachshund, super stubborn but the smartest dog I ever had.

LOL...I see no one is going to talk me out of it!

MCHRKiller: pitbulls are not registered, and due to banning of AmStaffs and StaffBulls I'd be stuck if I ever wanted to compete in another province. I looked at Cane Corsos, but they're not registered either and have too many aggression problems...something I don't want to revisit.

gabby: That would be ideal! I don't see why they wouldn't let neutered mutts compete. I know it's a purebred club, but as long as you're supporting neutering and NOT breeding cross-breds, I think it would a great gesture on the part of the CKC. But maybe they're just not wanting to encourage breeding all these 'designer' dogs?

gadget: Apparently there is a newish program that will permit the registration of unregistered purebreds...if they are obviously purebreds (so that people who got shafted, like I did, with the breeder not sending the papers) they can compete in obed, but I don't think my mini - at 5 years old - would be thrilled to start at this point in her life. Not to mention, bending down that far for training is really hard on my back.... I am thinking about it would fit the bill.

promise: lots of breeds aren't registerd! Mastiff - too big, too slobbery. Bulldog...too many health issues...not very trainable as far as official competitions go. Doberman...hubby just doesn't like them. Can't leave him out of the choice.

Two breeds I am considering are the Black and Tan Coonhound and the Pudelpointer. Both are close - but neither is 'quite' right. Pudelpointers have different degrees of hair coat. The smoother ones are quite smooth. But they're a 'protected' breed, by hunters. I don't know if they'd sell one to someone wanting to do obedience.

    Coonhounds rock.

And I doubt youll get a pudle from a hunter for other then hunting purposes lol.

I got some hounds down in texas and a few pits that pretty much take down the pigs but they work great as a hunting pack, the coonhounds sniff them out and the pits go in and fight, hounds then corner the pig, oh its a sight to be seen.

    good luck with your decision

You might want to look at a Shiloh Sherpard (link below). They meed most of your requirements. One of the smartest breeds I've seen. The only drawback for your list is the longer hair

My wife and I were saving up to one of these guys until we found Otis (my avitar).
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Yes, they're beautiful...but I'd rather not have a double coat to deal with...I'd get another Cardigan otherwise...but even they're too much for me at the moment...with 4 dogs and 10 horses to maintain...

I say no. You've already got 4 dogs and your still training your youngest dog. It would be too much work.
