Understood, That's why I mentioned the ahsupply fixtures.
The mylar I referred to is not stiff at all, Just 1, 2, or 3 mm thick. It would just need to be glued or whatever to the fixture interior.
When I consider DIY projects involving H2O and electricity I always keep in mind that I am not especially handy so I subscribe to the k.i.s.s. theory myself lol.
Nice thread & good luck with it all.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.
A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.

My fixtures arrived today! I think I found the world's slowest amazon.com merchant, but I wasn't in a hurry.

That's a big freakin' box!

Shipping provided by the always careful folks at UPS...

But hey, they work.

Unfortunately I'm about out of funds for the time being. I figure I'll need about 50$ to install the fixtures and build the moonlighting (with most of that being spent on automatic timers), but I'm going to have to wait until november to get what I need. In the mean time I'll develop my plan for the tank's filtration system.
Since there won't be anything else to report for a while, I give you: CATS PLAYING IN A BOX!

I've had good luck with those coralife fixtures, I've heard a couple people that dislike em but I say good purchase there. Getting things together, it looks, and November isn't that far away! right on. What's the shipping on the cats cost?
No matter how much I learn or know I'm still gonna be a NOOB, but that doesn't mean I'm an idiot!

I've got those fixtures on my 90 gallon. They are pretty good, I really like the low profile.
I love the cats pics as well. Yu gotta love all that help

well, I blew the last of my October budget on velcro. How exciting! It does let me move forwards, though.

I cleaned the inside of the lid with the rough side of a sponge and some dilute bleach. It removed most of the old hard water residue and crud. It also scratched the hell out of the acrylic, which I don't care about on the inside of the lid, but it's good to know for later.

I adhered one side of the velcro to the top of the light fixtures...

...and the other side to the inside of the lid. It's very strong adhesive, and there's a ton of surface area holding up not much weight, so I feel good about this approach, so long as things don't get too hot - more on that later.

Before:

After:

Let there be (modern) light!

Tank of the month entry right here. I just need a few more things, like filtration, substrate, rocks, driftwood, plants, and fish.

I wanted to space the lights out as much as possible without wasting any light into the filter compartments. I'm pretty pleased with the layout.
My one potential concern is that things might get a bit hot. Strictly speaking the fixtures are not intended to be installed the way I have. My next task will be to monitor the temperature in the hood, in particular right at the velcro interface, and see if things get out of hand when the lights are left on for an extended period. I've got a multimeter with a temperature probe that will work great, but it needs a fresh battery.
Now, off to wash my hand until it stops smelling like chlorine!
