The fish that died was not a betta but a gourami. I'll get to the betta in a moment. I was away for a week so had someone feed the fish. I came home and everything looks good so far except the gourami. The person who fed the fish said he looked a bit stressed and wouldn't eat before he died. She thinks he died of loneliness because he was the only fish in the tank. The tank is still running but is now empty. I was wondering if I could put one of my bettas in this 10g tank. But I'm not sure which one. I want one that will do okay with other fish like tetras. One of the bettas was once with a frog and didn't mind but is now a bit of a grump. The other has always been alone but is more energetic and seems happier. What should I do?

First, I'd figure out why the gourami died. Then figure out your stocking, then add the tetras or whatever you go with. Betta goes in last. I'd go with the non-crowntail as CTs tend to be more aggressive than VTs.

How long can it run without fish and still be cycled? I don't know why the gourami died. I couldn't have been loneliness could it? I do have a CT and the other betta is just a normal blue one.

If you don't have any unadulterated ammonia (without dyes, perfumes or surfactants) then put in a small amount of fish food - it will decompose and produce ammonia in the process. You should get fish in there as soon as you can.

I agree with Lab you should figure out why your gourami died, then add your tetras or whichever fish you choose then put your betta in. I always add my betta last if possible, my CT is just as laid back as my VT. I would add whichever fish you want before the betta though and in the meantime add food like fishgirl said.

The fish had a brown spot on his side I'm guessing from the heater burning him about a week ago. I'll do a water test tomorrow. Sometimes fish die for no real reason. Maybe it's just where I buy them. How many days can the tank go without fish and still stay cycled?
