Video of flying carp
This is what happens when non-native fish are introduced into our waterways.
Altho the video is amusing, the story behind this is rather tragic. It seems that several years ago, these carp were imported into the US from Japan to clean the algae from fish farms. They escaped into our waterways and now many of our states have this mess to contend with as the fish moves down the Mississippi.
One report is that it started in GA and another report in Alabama but now this carp explosion is in Illinois and threatening to come into MI into our waterways.
There are so many that our native fish are being starved out. In this river in Illinois, people can not go water skiing, go boating without getting clubbed with this useless fish and don't dare take their child boating. Some of them are anywhere from 30-50 pounds and one was caught that weighed 90.
Many people have been injured, had noses broken and one lady was hit so hard she fell unconscious into the lake and had to be rescued.
Mi is suing Illinois and 5 States are suing the government. The government has pledged over 70 million on some sort of thing that will electrocute them as they try to pass the Locks in Illinois.
I just watched a show on these fish on TV and two boats laid out nets and caught 1400 pounds of them in 2 hours! And no one eats them. The thousands of pounds that are being dragged out are sold as cat food.
Anyway, it sure is tragic what a few released fish into our waters can do and what an environmental mess they can make. About 8 states are threatened by these things and I have no idea what they can do about them. IMO, this is worse than an oil spill. That mess can be cleaned up in time but I don't know about this one unless they poison all the lakes.

Not a mod but I can embed.
Too bad they can't harvest them all and make them into dog food or something.Last edited by Lab_Rat; 08-27-2010 at 02:04 AM.

No prob! And I see I totally skimmed, I'm glad they're making them into cat food. My dog would love to have those for dinner.
