how do i clean my canister?

ok so for my ehiem 2215, there are 4 valves, one on the intake and one on the intake tubing, and then one on the output and one on the output piping.
what is the procedure for cleaning it?
my guess is.
switch it off at the wall. flick off all the valves, disconnect hosing, remove lid, extract media, wash in a bucket of tank water. re assemble, reconnect hose, flick the valves open, and turn it back on.

will that work? and also do i need to re-prime? or will the siphon start on its own when i open valves?. and do i need to clean the pump and stuff?

You have got it. By closing the valves the siphon should still be there and once you open the valves, the cannister wiil refill and you will be set to go. I generally refill the cannister so I do not have to top off the gallon of water that will flow out of the tank into the filter.
