I don't get it. Why do my Bettas never get older than a year? this time even only 7 month. He was in a 5 gallon tank with Tetra Whisper Filter, Gravel, little cave with silk plants attached. Just checked the water: Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, pH 7.6, Ammonia 0 (API Mater Test Kit). I change every day 8 cups of the water. By the way the Amano Shrimp in there is doing fine. Should I get my Bettas from better sources? Got them both from Petsmart.

It is very possible that the bettas yu are buying at Petsmart are a year or more old allready.

It will be expensive, but finding a good breeder on line will net you a quality fish that will be only a few months old.

I am sorry about your loss.

I looked at AquBid, but I am a little overwhelmed with all the varieties there. Is it save to order something from another country? Is there a good source here in America (get breed here in the country)?

    Hello Gisela,

I have had my Siamese Fighter now just over a year (15th Aug) so am waiting to see how much longer I can keep him with me. I had to move him to a 5 gallon tank several months ago on account that he started chasing my rummy nose tetra's. Since moving him to the smaller tank he does seem to be a little more lazy not sure if this is down to the tank size or age could even perhaps be that there is less current for him to battle against in the 5 gallon tank. I was told by my cousin who works at the shop where I purchased him that most are roughly 6 months old at the time of sale at least from the shop he works at that is.

Maybe something else to consider is your Fighters Diet? Not sure how much of an impact on life expectancy this would have though. I have also heard that larger water changes are better than small ones again how true this is I don't know. I currently do 90% water changes on my Siamese Fighters tank once every week. Just perhaps a couple of things to consider that may affect the life span of a Siamese Fighter keep in mind though I am fairly new to this hobby.

    ISquishWorms.

Oh one last thing that may be of some interest not sure. I normally feed my Fighter 3-5 Hikari Better Bio Gold pellets a day and sometimes I will supplement with NLS Small Fish Pellets. I have heard that it is fairly easy to over feed Siamese Fighters I guess this because they are lazy and greedy by nature so dont lose the weight.

I forgot to write I still do a 50% waterchange once the week, too. I fed him 3 times a day small amounts of different foods (Omega One etc.)

Sounds like you might just be unlucky then and that Rich could be right and that they are quite old already when you purchase them. I hope your next Siamese Fighter lives to be a grand old man.

I was thinking the same thing that rich said. You have no idea of the age of these fish when they're purchased. None of them look like babies to me.

Just bought a beautiful White Platinum HMPK Male Betta on AquaBid. Cost me $34.00 with shipping, but he will be healthier than the once in the tiny boxes at the shops.
