I agree completely with Dave66. There is a reason fish thrive in Walstad style planted tanks. They are a "feed only" system. I never have my hands in mine, water changes are surprisingly infrequent, but water quality is very very high. They have plenty to eat and are extremely active. Most Walstad planted tank owners report their fish spawning on a regular basis and have the fry survive.

Another factor may be that he's had the tank for 3 years. It's had time to mature and stabilise. Once that happens, maintenance becomes less frequent because the tank can often self-regulate. Just don't change things ...

I would also factor in the piss poor quality of most fish in the LFS trade, you could just be getting weak fish and instead of just keeping the survivors and moving on you buy more. My bet is at one time he had went through alot of fish initially and the ones that remain are the ones that survived. Ive had a terrible time with stocking my 100G getting healthy stock lately, the only healthy fish I have bought lately have been 100% pure wild fish.

Walsted tanks are low stocking and lots of plants, we are talking a small over stocked tank here. The nitrate I am sure are through the roof, good luck adding another fish or if anything goes wrong as those fish have very compromised immune systems.

I dont care much about all the hearsay, you want healthy fish stock right and do lots of water changes.

Walstad tanks are not necessarily lightly stocked. I've seen some heavily stocked ones that do quite well. Regardless though, it is all about stability of environment for the fish.

Walstad tanks are also loaded with plants to utilize the waste and act as a huge purification system for the tank. I highly doubt Pele's brother has a tank loaded with live plants. I do totally agree about stability being imperative for a successful tank. I hardly touch mine, save the weekly water changes.
