I have two rat moms that are going into labor at the same time!!! Our Blue Dumbo (Lacy) has one born and still working hard while our black and white girl (Baby) just built a nest and looks to be having contractions! What are the odds of both them having litters today! We're super excited! I'll update a little later!

No fishtanks for these guys/gals (none of my tanks are offered live prey these days). Snakefood...maybe for a few? Most will end up being rehomed as pets and several may remain here with us (as pets).

So far things have been very unfortunate though. Lacy is rejecting her babies...4 out of 7 have already passed. I decided to offer the last three to Baby in hopes that she will adopt them. They are both first time moms, so I guess complications are to be expected. Still sad though.

Its the most important question imo, followed closely by "why are they breeding in the first place?"

Imho you should use them as snake food and separate your males from your females permanently unless you have quite a few snakes. Home bred rats are not suitable for pets in most cases, its further inbreeding a bloodline that most likely already has inbreeding problems. Its possible it has something to do with the rejection as well.

If you want to breed rats for pets, its best to start with rats from different, reputable sources. "Pure bred" rats such as hairless or dumbo have common rats bred back into the bloodline to counter-act poor genes and health than can occur from these practices.

Sorry to be somewhat critical on a celebratory thread.
