Re-do the tank. Add more hiding places so he is not using just one spot. Is their a lot of wood and caves in the tank to make him secure? I agree with floating plants (plastic or real) to give him more security. I also think he may like another severum to keep him company. Many of those south american cichlids are very social and would appreciate another of his own species.

I do need to add some more hiding places I just redid the tank and didnt do such a good job on that I think I may build him a cave out of som 6in pvc pipe and some rocks tonight and I think I may go to the lfs monday to get some more drift wood and maybe some floating plants. And maybe I should go with another sev instead of the angels.

Just out of curiosity would 3 sevs be too much for a 55gal with 2 bovarian rams and a few mollies?
Also, will mollies work for dither fish or does it have to be a schooling fish?

the big problem i see with mollies is that they arent too terribly fast, if your severums decide that its time for them to go they stand little chance. Ive always had good luck with danios or larger tetras like black skirts.

the mollies I have now seem to be fine. Atleast I don't see any ragged fins or signs of stress.

all that the severums have to do is decide that they dont want the mollies around anymore and they will quickly eliminate them. Whereas giant danios (my personal favorite dither) move just under the speed of sound so as long as your tank isnt too small they can easily evade most cichlids.

Well dang cause I really like mollies (I know hard to believe). I guess Ill think about it more, my sev now is very docile but if I put another in there he/she may not be the same way. First I need to set up my tank for a couple sevs and my rams. From there I will decide on a dither fish.

Thank you all for your help so far I really appreciate it. Im still curious on having 3 sevs in a 55gal with 2 bolvarian rams?

I think 2 severum in a 55 is more than enough. They grow pretty fast and can become quite large. My green severum was 2 inches when I brought him home 3 months ago. He's at least 4.5 inches now.

Dither fish are a great idea. Giant danios might work, but I feel like they may be too fast for the severum, and might freak them out. Possibly a school of Buenos Aires tetras.

I'd also try to move the mollies. You could put them in your 30 gallon when you set them up.

I really thought 3 would be too much and the mollies are on their way out. One balloon is about to die, one is male and I dont need more babies and the other two will just be given away but Im not to worried about them they have been in there for a good 6 months and I havent had any problems. Thanks for the suggestions on dither fish I need to go to the lfs and look around and see what I like.

it really depends on the fish, and what mood they are in. You could be fine with mollies in the tank for a long time. I just remember one time i had a 6 inch jack dempsey that was as gentle as could be until one day she snapped and killed a 4 inch pleco and nearly killed a convict of her same size. After that one outburst i never had a problem again.
