  1. Default White Fuzz on Bulb of Plant

    0 Not allowed!
I am trying my first live plant in my tank. I bought a package of bulbs from Walmart labeled Hardy Aponogeton Bulbs. I dropped one in to begin and it has 5 or 6 good green stems coming from it.

However, recently it has also developed a white fuzz on the bulb. I assume this is mold of some sort. Is it bad for the tank? Should I take it out or leave it in as long as the plant keeps growing.

As long as you are getting growth I would just leave it be. It is not likely the substance will hurt anything.

Is the bulb soft? If so, it could be rotting. I don't know much about bulbs but have read if growing fungus they should be removed because they are rotting. I don't know if removing it and hitting it with some peroxide will help or not. I think I would remove it myself. Some fungus is toxic to fish. But as already stated, I know little about aquarium bulbs.

I figure if it is growing then the bulb is being used by the young plant. I would bury the bulb now an hope the plant keeps growing.

How far should I bury it? All the way?

Has it developed roots? Plant it 3/5 or 1/2, just so the top sticks out.

If the bulb turns out to be bad, probably not worth it but I think on the back of the packing for the bulbs is a mailing address where you send in the "bad" bulbs and they send you new ones.

Yeah, I didn't pay much for them so I probably won't look for a refund. The two I've put in so far do seem to be growing though. I'm excited to get some real plants in there.
I was also thinking about maybe putting some Java Fern or Java Moss in there. I heard those are pretty easy. Will I get snails if I buy those though?

Both the plants you mentioned will work. Depends if snails are on the plants when you get them. You can take a bucket of water and add a bit of bleach to it, then dunk the plants in there to get rid of the snails and snail eggs. Then just rinse the plants off real well. Don't leave them in there too long else you'll kill the plants too. Alternatively you could just wipe down all the surfaces of the plant in some water to get rid of the snails.
