  1. Default Quick tank question

I am going to try and get my 30/33 gallon tank on the way this afternoon. I want sand but not quite sure what to put into it yet. Is it O.K. to fill with water, add filter and start the cycle process and add sand later after cycling complete. I know I'd have to turn off the filter and then add the sand but I was just curious, don't have the money for the sand yet/haven't decided. Also I was thinking about the pool filter sand for the shellies, would the sand color do them justice or should I go to another color. THANKS.
1--29 gallon tank: 1 small angelfish, pygmy cory, and 4 baby albino bristlenose.
2--55 gallon tank: 1 adult angelfish, 7 black skirt tetras, 5 yo yo loaches, 1 synodontis catfish and 1 spotted raphael.
3--3 gallon tank with female betta.

You can start the cycle and add the substrate later. Without any fish it would not be a big deal anyway.

Yes you could set it up to start your filter cycling. I know what it is like trying to streach a dollar. You should check out your local gravel pits. I have often used gravel from ours. You can sift out the very fine and very large with diff. sizes of wire mesh. Ask for a pea gravel or an exposed aggregate stone gravel. I have saved a ton of money on gravel. Most gravel yards will give you a few buckets free. You may be pleasantly surprized.
