Betta Tumor
About 2-3 months ago we noticed this spot on his side. It looked at the time like a missing scale and a slight fungal infection.
Here's his good side:
Here's a little while after we noticed the "wound":
Here's now:
This thing... tumor... has come from the inside pushing his scales outward and causing them to fall off. It doesn't react to meds, no matter what kind. He's strong and seems quite well otherwise. As you can see, his colour is awesome, he's very active, an eats like he's been toking. He doesn't seem to pay it any attention.
So, am I correct in thinking that this is a tumor????

Oh, I'm sorry. I don't know what that could be to confirm either way but I know other people who's bettas had tumours that never opened up this way. Got me stumped, but I hope someone cam help soon.
Keep your boy comfortable for now, keep his water pristine while this gets figured out for you.
Sorry again. P.S. you have a handsome boy there though :)

That's what we've been doing, Rich... :( I wish there was something I could do for the little guy. My partner loves him and she'll be heartbroken when he's gone. I figured this was the case but I wanted to ask to make sure I wasn't missing something. He has a heater, filtered tank so he's comfy at least...

Try antibiotics on him. See if you can get your hands on furan 2 and do daily water change and redose on furan 2. Keep the lights off and hope for the best.
Think with logic and rationality more than emotion. Act with moderation and consideration. Contemplate ideals and realistic goals and weigh out possibilities and options. Temper not with personal delusions or false hope but learn to accept and move on.
