30 Gallon Filter System

Okay so I'm trying to figure out what filter system to use in converting my freshwater setup to a saltwater setup. I'd rather not go the rout of a canister filter or sump filter if I don't have to. I've read over the back filters are okay to use on smaller setup. I'd probably use a 50-100 gallon capacity filter or 2 smaller ones like 25 gallons. Would that work okay?
