Ok. so i went on vacation for 5 days and i left my big bro in charge of my animals. The most i was worried about were my fish. I figured nothing can go wrong with this. Well i told him to only each tank once on saturday. Just once in the 5 days because that should have been fine. I come home to all my tanks lake water brown. Here he put a handfull of food in for each day. OMG over feeding big time. I lost 7 african cichlids, 2 convicts, a couple platies and like 2 corries. I now have to spend the rest of my night trying to get everything down in the ammonia becuase this is not healthy for the fish. UGH. UGH. UGH.

So sorry! I have no suggestions other than lots of water changes...and make him carry the buckets...

Also want to add: Next time, put a bit of food in one of those plastic pill containers...then all he has to do is dump that bit of food in the tank...no room for error (er, unless he comes up with something really weird!)...

We hear that all the time here that someones fish was overfed while they were away. I guess we need to take more time in explaining to those in charge just how to feed fish.

I went on vacation for 10 days and returned home to a filter running dry. The water level had gone down so much the filter could not pick up water and was surprised it hadn't burned out. The person I left in charge fed the fish just fine but for some reason didn't notice the water was way too low. DOH!

I just dont know where to begin. Iahve a thought since now i am going to have to bump up my african cichlid count before they start killing eachother there are only like 4 left :(. Anyway i am thinking about redoing my aquarium my 55 gallon. Since i have an open 10 gallon and an open 20 gallon i think i am going to move all my fish from my 55 gallon to those two tanks and get new substrate and stuff becuause it is so bad that i will have to empty my tank and take it down and scrub it. The walls of the aquarium are so thickened by planaria it isnt funny. I can barely see the fish. I might go for a planted tank with planted substrate. The only thing is How long would it take for plants to root and take hold before i can put my fish back in the aquarium. Ugh i am trying to be positive with this thing but it just frustrates me to death. All the work i did to make my aquariums nice GONE!!! It took me months and then gone in 5 days. Ugh. I dont use buckets i use rubbermaid bins and they are easy to move.

I gave him exact instruction on what to do also. I said about everything. I even put the food in a bag but he felt it wasnt enough so he put more in. I put all dechlorinator and buckets next to my bed so if water went to low he could easily fill them. Thank god he did or might not have any fish.

Wipe the sides of the glass down and gravel the vac and do a couple good water changes. And don't feed for a couple days. It should take care of itself.

This water is like black tho just black. I can barely see in it so i dont even know i could have lost way more fish. What do you think of the idea aobut moving the fish?

Do several large water changes serially, with an hour or two between changes. Make sure you carefully match temperature since you'll be removing a lot of water. You don't have to wait for plants to take root before adding fish.

My fish dig them out. They dont let them in. Once they are rooted in they are fine it is just until they are able to get a chance my fish will dig them out. Cories for ya.

Black water, filthy substrate so bad it's unsalvageable, and a planaria infestation so bad you can't see the fish, from one bad feeding? Maybe there's an underlying problem here?
