    What constitutes today's expert:

Usually some 20ish slender blond with fake hair, fake boobs and fake teeth.

Having, involving, or demonstrating great skill, dexterity, or knowledge as the result of experience or training.
I thought that was pretty good.

I know what you mean though, the dog training field is a lot like this hobby, childcare or healthcare in that the information is constantly changing. Therefore all the experience in the world isnt worth diddly if you arent staying current with information. Some experts shouldnt be considered as them, and some hobbyists are easily experts.

We've all had that crackpot doctor, well theres crackpots in every profession lol

Id say, as long as you are scrutinizing all sources you are doing things right.

Are there no older people out there willing to let their name stand? Or are older people just not marketable? Frankly, I have more confidence in older people that 20-somethings (as experts).

Doesn't mean you can't be an expert when you're young...I have a met a couple of those too...but they're few and far between.

There was a comedian on Comedy Central who during a stand up routine said "the only thing the 20 somethings do better than us 50 somethings is look better so when one of them opens their mouth I say 'shut the [expletive] up and strike a pose'"
