So the bf named the Rubbernose pleco "Vulcan"

I asked if this was a Star Trek reference.

He said it was a reference to Vulcanized rubber.

How big of geeks are we?

I don't even know what vulcanized rubber is, though nearly everyone knows what a Vulcan is, so I'm going to have to vote for the boyfriend!

Vulcanized Rubber is rubber that has been heated and has had other compounds (such as sulfer) added to make it harder. For example clarinet mouthpieces and some bowling balls are made from a type of vulcanized rubber that makes them super hard, but most people are more familiar with tire rubber that has been vulcanized so its less "sticky" and more firm.

edit.... don't let this explanation influence you on my geekiness!

I'd have to concur that thinking the name of "Vulcan" for a fish brings Star Trek to mind first and foremost. Much more geeky IMO as a reference to vulcanized rubber, so I'd have to say that the bf is more of a geek. (Not that there's anything wrong with being a geek as I am proud to be one myself).

While I would never attend a Trekkie convention, or wear a Trekkie costume...there is nothing geeky about 'just' being a fan...

    Your boyfriend wins!

You know...you could have named the fish after the town of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada too...

Rest assured, neither of us are in the slightest offended by our geekiness. We laughed at each other when we had the conversation... and he laughed at me when I told him I posted the poll here.

I don't think either of us has been to a trekkie convention; however in the fairness of disclosure, I did attend a comic convention in my younger years and Jeri Ryan was one of the guests. I did not stand in line with the drooling klingon fan boys to pay for her autograph though
