  1. Default Heat transferrence from sumps to tanks

    Hi,

If you are transferring 1500liters per hour, from a sump to tank and want to keep the tank at a constant (within 2oC) what size heater would you need to heat the water that quickly?

The tank is my 125G that im building......

    Cheers

    kai

I'd personally get a heater that is rated for something a little bigger than your tank that can be adjusted and throw a thermometer in the middle of the display tank. Then just tinker with it until you get the temperature you're looking for .

  3. Default

Get several heaters and if you can get one a Ranco controller,(you will have to wire up the Ranco controller) with the Ranco you can plug all the heaters into it and set the temp you want on the Ranco, if kicks on when it gets below the temp you set and kicks off when it gets to the temp you set. Check them out, they are the only way I control my heaters that way I know that the heaters wont get stuck on and bake the whole tank or not come on at all and freeze the tank.

I would get 2 or 3 under rated heaters and put them on a controller. We have 2, 150 watt heaters on our 75 gallon with a 20 gallon sump. Their hooked up to our reefkeeper lite controller with the temp probe in the return chamber and the heaters in the display. We also have a fan blowing across the top of the tank hooked up to the same controller. We have the heaters set to 80 and the fan set at 80.5. With this combo there is little fluctuation. It stays 80 at night and gets no warmer then 80.7 during the day, even though both 250 Watt hqi on 12 hrs a day

The Ranco controller will run you about $60 us dollars and the RKL will run you alot more then that.
