  1. Question Is my food to big???

    Hi all,

I am very new to keeping fish, I have a 35 gallon tank with 2 oranders that I got last week. They are fine and I am feeding them flake food which they seem to enjoy.

I sent my missus to get 2 more fish to go with the Oranders but she came back with 6 tiny little fish (sorry I don't know what type they are) they are the same size as neons. The lady in the shop told my missus that they need a veriaty of food to keep them interested. So she gave my missus some Tetrafin which are small pellets. We got the small fish 2 days ago and when I feed them they quickly swim to the pellets then don't eat them.

The pellets seem to be to bog for the fishes mouths. But wouldn't the lady in the shop no that?

Am I being paranoid or does this sound like a real problem?

    Cheers
    Matt.

    welcome!

Goldfish need 20g for the first, and 10g after, so good job on not puting them into a 10g and getting more. The small fish sound like white clouds, small and red.

Chances are the white clouds dont like the pellets, so flakes and the odd freeze dried or frozen bloodworm should work out, though be careful not to let the goldfish have any blood worm.

Not much to add other than another opinion in agreement with cocoa. Oh, other than to say "...but wouldn't the lady in the shop know that?" Obviously not, and not surprising either.
    8 tanks running now:
    1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.

    Welcome!

I've stopped giving flakes...too many swim bladder issues...I use pellets now...

...but if you do use flakes...soak them first so that they sink...that will lesson the odds of your goldies gulping air...

Don't forget to give your goldies a variety of foods as well...I like frozen goldfish food...as well as frozen peas and fresh/blanched lettuce, zucchini, spinach, orange slices...

...and broccoli as I just found out!

I have 4 goldfish...one is an oranda...nothing special about him...just the garden variety...but pretty cute nonetheless...

  5. Smile Thanks

    Hi all

thanks for the replies, I didn't realize there was so many food options. Thats a good tip to soak the flakes first.

Yep I have just done it. I crushed the flakes up and soked them in a cup of the tank water and the little fish went crazy for it.

    Cheers for the advice.

    Matt.
