  1. Default Very quick question....bit wierd.

I want hydra! How do I get HYDRA? :)

I've got a large, glass ,scientific bottle, that I've had in my office for a year now, its nicely established plenty of boilogy dead and alive (daphnia/snails/oxygenating weed/java fern/lots of other wiggley things...used to have cherry shrimp but they died), un heated (sits at room temp 20C), I've never changed the water.

    Thanks!

You can probably buy them from a biological supply house. Or you might be able to phone around to high-schools or the university...they might be able to give you a couple left over from labs...

    Thanks.
    So you can purchase them!?

Most forums detail how to get rid of them, I just think they sound facinating!

We've used them in biology labs...you can't buy them as pets I don't think.

They can be found in most still ponds or waterholes where theres infusoria present. All it takes is lots of samples and patience I guess. Try around the edges near water plants.

You can evern breed your own bloodworms!

A fresh and live bloodworm is a million time better to use than those frozen ones, they are very easy to breed as well, all you need is a bucket of water about 5cm deep then chuck a few leaves in their, the midges will come and lay their eggs in the water (along with the mozzies) but there is no way around this.

After about a week look closely at the now rotten leaves and debris on the bottom you should see bloodworm, when you do see some worms harvest them at night as they are most active at this time, use one of thse small goldfish nets for harvesting.

Once you have harvested a few of these worms place them into a bowl of de-chlorinated water in an ice cream tub, feed the bloodworm liqiduized meals like tuna maizemeal etc. and keep this container out of direct sunlight, preferably in a dark enviroment.

Keep checking on them and when they reach about 1-1.5cm in length its time to harvest them again and freeze them, leave some in this container about 10-20 and keep the lid closed for a week, the left over bloodworm turn into midges which lay eggs in the container and then die again, so there is no need for the bucket in the open again and the mozzies.

It takes awhile to start but once you get it going they breed rather fast, bloodworm eggs ahtch in 2 days time and a bloodworm lives between 3-5weeks before it becomes a midge.

I believe the OP wanted to keep hydra, not bloodworms.
