Thread: Adding ammonia

I am little confused. I have been re-reading about fishless cycling. One article I read says to add enough ammonia to get readings to 4-5 ppm. Then check daily. Another article I read said to add enough ammonia to get your readings to same amount then keep adding that amount daily. Then once you get nitrites to reduce the daily amount by half.
Which is the right to do? Also should water changes be done? As of now I have performed no water changes nor added anymore ammonia. Othr then the initial to get my readings to 4 - 5 ppm.

Add enough ammonia to register 4-5 on your tester. When you start to see nitrites in about a week, drop back on the ammonia to around 2. By then you will need to be adding it daily as it will drop to 0 overnight.
PS.....You need not bother testing the ammonia for a few days because no bacteria has grown yet so give it a few days then start with the testing. It should take about 6-7 days to start seeing nitrites and then another week before they reach their peak and began to start falling. That is, if all goes according to the normal time frame.

Ok thanks Lady Hobbs.
One more question. Would be ok if I lifted the bio media out to take a look at the foam media? Started my process on March 13 and wanted to if anything was happening in my Aquaclear 70 filter.
