Default How do you grow mat plants.

I have microsword in which i am trying to grow a mat out of. Idk exactly how to do this. I did place it in little clumps about 10mm around the tank and they just dont show signs of improvement so how would I grow a mat?

I think you have the concept down but I wonder if you have enough lighting/ferts to accomplish the growth you are looking for?
    8 tanks running now:
    1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.

When I planted mine, I did pretty much the same thing. It took a while to get established but once it did, it took off. Does well in good lighting, co2 will help as well.

    How big is the tank?
What kind of lighting are you using?
    substrate?

    55 gallon
    2wpg
Sand with root tabs. I think the main concern is that my cories keep uprooting them so i was thinking about removing the cories for the time being. Just some advice.

I've never grown microsword before, but the other mat plants I've grown wouldn't form mats in less than 3 wpg. Less than that and they just seemed to grow vertically; nice looking, but not what I was going for. Make sure the lighting is in the right spectrum (I find that if the light is 6700k I have more wiggle room in terms of wpg) and you probably wanna remove those cories until the plants start to reproduce. My cories caused so much chaos when I was trying to grow my glosso mat! Other than that, just give it time. Good luck.

I think that lighting is low to get the micro sword to grow and spread. To do what you want you would need more light, CO2 and a good plant substrate.

Oh. The bulb says that it is "sunlight bulb" or something of that assortment. I was really hoping for a mat plant tho i just like the way they look. Since my dad is going to buy me some more sand for in aquarium to bump up the strate to 3". I also plan to use root tabs and i also am going to use root tabs. So is there anything that you could recomend that would be good for growing a mat along the bottom of my auarium.

I seen a type of moss that is fast growing and it does really well in lower type aquariums and it isnt really a moss but some type of small leafed plant. I forget the name.
