  1. Default shortnose gar...

I have a question. How rare is a shortnose gar? I have read that they are rare and have also read that they are not so rare. Any info would be appriciated. thank's everyone.

Ï assume you mean in aquarium. If so it depends largely on where you live.
Do as I say. Not as I do.

I'm staring at one in my office tank now!

They are one of the less common gars to show up in the hobby, but they're not all that rare to find (like let's say the Cuban or Tropical Gar). I will say that unless you have vast experience in keeping gar...A Shorty will be a nightmare to keep. They are psychotic and it seems like about 8 out of 10 will kill themselves during the YOY stage of their lives. They are just very skittish/jumpy and often times end up darting into the glass causing severe spinal injury/death.

If you know how to keep them and/or get lucky and find a calm one...They are an incredible fish to keep! They are also one of the more manageable gars (size wise) to keep...I have yet to see one in captivity over 18".

    Hope this helps.
