Poor fish, when it gets to be that old you might think it deserves the right to live to die of old age. Also shame on the man being cheap and not wanting to put such a magnificant fish on the wall. Almost like its death was in vain

I like to fish but spearfishing isn't for me because I have always been a catch and release fisherman, If I were ever to catch something like that the picture that I would take of it would be better than it hanging on the wall.

You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.

The fact that he's being a cheap SOB and not mounting it on his wall is what really gets me. Nothing against those who do, but I don't see anything morally wrong with recreational fishing...but don't waste the damn thing.

It is a dam shame!
There isn't much he can do with it!Mounting was about the best thing he could have done.
Sturgeon doesn't taste too bad when they are under 3ft but thats a hundred years old.How good could that taste?

There's no catch and release when spearfishing... sad sad sad. I practice catch and release unless it's fish we're going to eat (perch, pickeral, trout, salmon). All the bass and pike and such are released. This poor 100 year-old sturgeon is going to waste.

Honestly, probably what happened was he saw the fish, freaked because of the size of the thing, and speared it before even thinking about mounting or what he was going to do with it or just how old it was...
I hope that the taking of this fish's life will at least serve some purpose. Maybe a local museum or the DNR/state fisheries could have it mounted for public display? I support both commercial and recreational fishing as long as it's regulated properly and that the lives of the fish are not just wasted. Catch and release or eat it. It's very easy to take life, too easy at times, but impossible to bestow. If you can't give life then you should damn well know just what it is that you're doing when you take a life.
It's sad to see an elder like this go. That fish is possibly a big reason that the stocks are finally recovering. Who know how many fry came from it's spawns...
