For tanks 10 gal and under I normally recommend apple snails or mystery snails. Otto cats are another In my opinion plecos are to big for a 10 gal tank

Otos are your best bet for a ten if its an algae issue.http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/fish...lusaffinis.php
Plecos need more room would pollute a ten in no time. They have too large of a bio load.

No plecos available for ten gallons. Even the smalest pleco would be too big.

Go with pygmy cories, apple snails, or otocincli.
    A severe lack of trichogaster.

Just because your Gourami is sick does not mean it is always Iridovirus, DGIV, Gourami Disease, et cetera.
Look at all the other factors in your tank before coming to this conclusion.

Can you recommend some for a 20 gallon that stay relatively "under control". My friend is looking to try raising a pleco, but he got so freaked out when he saw how fast my sailfin grows.

bristlenose and rubberlip plecos stay fairly small. With any pleco, have great filtration because they are waste machines.

A clown pleco might also work out. Like crispy said, be sure to keep up ont he filtration and water changes. Prepare for poo.
