Wanting a Blood Parrott
I am really wanting to add a blood parrot to my tank and wonder if you think this is a possibility. I have two angels, 3 firemouth, 3 red tail tetras, and 4 zebra danios. I also have a ferrowellow catfish(stickfish thing). I would like to take back one of my firemouths because he is a male and super aggressive with my angels picking on them, the other two I am pretty positive are female and are super shy and stay together not dealing with the Angels who are much bigger, all the little guys are super fast and its heavily planted and they are always out of trouble. Do you think I could add a Blood parrot to this group, I have read a lot that they arent too aggresive with angels, either way I think I have to get this mean firemouth out, its said cause he has grown pretty big and is so beautiful, but he is the king of the tank.
Its a 55 gallon good filtration, heater, and heavily live planted with rocks and driftwood. Thanks in advance

Blood parrots would be a really nice addition to that tank.

Get rid of all the firemouths,They would not be a good mix with bp.Bp are not really all that peaceful and can get quite snotty, the trouble is when they mess with something that can defend itself, the bp cannot close there mouths so any aggression they have is without bite.

I have to agree with smaug. You have two angels which can be aggressive and then two firemouths if you get rid of one. I think you have enough aggression already.

I have seen a few very peaceful BP's Smaug, but each fish has its own personality. With FM's I don't see them regularly being peaceful though. Yeah, many BP's get real snotty, and when they get picked on they can get mean, even though they can't do much. You hit the nail on the head though.

Many angels may hold their own with FM's, but I doubt a BP will. It might push them around a little because of the larger, or maybe wider body size.but it won't bite back like a FM will bite them. Also eventually I would think those FM's would do some damage to your tetras and danios. Not trying to be critical at all, but I think you can go BP and an angel maybe two plus the schooling fish you have, but I might up the school sizes. Also might just go either angel or BP, they can both be community fish depending on the space they have, and the BP is less likely to hurt other fish. Just my experience, angels can do more damage than BP'sNo matter how much I learn or know I'm still gonna be a NOOB, but that doesn't mean I'm an idiot!

I can only go with my experience. I put an angel in with my parrots and he constantly tormented the smallest of my parrots. He didn't mess with my largest one. They have finally settled down but a pair of angels is a whole different ballgame.
I tried my firemouths with them as well. The firemouths would grab onto the parrots mouths, as they do in fighting. And here is where the rubber meets the road. The parrot is big and fat and can push the firemouth around but he has no chance when it comes to the lip locking.
Anytime you have pairs in a tank, the odd man out is gonna catch all kinds of grief during spawning. Parrots are also social fish and like to be with their own kind. I wouldn't personally keep only one parrot in any tank. I honestly think a pair of angels and upping that school of tetra's would be a better option but this is only my opinion.
Yes, parrots are peaceful fish. They do great in community tanks but I would not chance them with two different types of other cichlids.Last edited by Lady Hobbs; 01-13-2010 at 12:37 PM.

Yep, my posts are always much longer than necessary, this is probably one of the shortest.

I have 3 BP's and 2 FM's...have never had a problem. In fact, the BP's pretty much run the show.
