eliminating ug filter?
I recently moved my 38 gal from basement to den. It has an undergravel filter w/ powerhead and an outside hanging filter(whisper, I think). However after deciding I would like to also put plants in the tank, I would like to not use the ugf and get an additional outside filter.
Can I simply remove the the up tube and powerhead? and is there a potential for water trouble with the "dead water" space under the ug plate?
I have nat. gravel but want to add sand for a better substrate for the plants.

No problem and should work fine after doing a water change and a gravel vac. You'll have a mess when you first take it out. So much nasty stuff gets trapped under those plates.

Welcome to the Fabulous AC!
I would get rid of it too! lol
As Lady Hobbs said give the tank a good gravel vac as you remove the gravel and the UGF.
What kind of filters are you thinking about getting.
Hang on the back filters are great but it also depends on the size of the tank and what fish you plan on keeping.Ray

Actually I was wondering if I could leave the ug plate in place without having to disrupt the whole tank(and not worry about water problems). BTW everything was cleaned well during the move 2 wks ago. I'm eyeballing a pair of red turquoise discus to put in here. Not sure what kind of os filter I want to get. I like my whisper w/ removable filter bag for easy cleaning. got any suggestions?

I'd honestly remove it. Especially now that it's just laying there with no pump to pull the stuff out. You may want to add a plant or two later and it will not work with plants.

I have a few! lol
Get rid of the UGF before it causes huge issues in your tank.
If you cannot clean under it get rid of it.All its going to do is trap debris and let it fester into a problem.
It will throw your perameters into a spin and may also help kill off your stock.
I would also get a new media for your filter.Aqua clear has the right idea. Its easier to clean and replace without hurting your cycle.
How big is your tank.? Filter?
What fish are you keeping?Ray

Agree with everyone else in pulling it out...it would be harder to do in the future, you're making changes now, might as well do it right the first time (speaking from experience

Thanks for the feedback, guess I'll be removing it before I get those discus and give the tank a chance to settle.
38 gal.
6 cardinals
2 clown loach
3 gold barbs
1 mosaic loach ( I think he's about 17 years old!)
2 big pieces of driftwood
1 red tail shark (on his way out, chases everything)
I like the idea of 2 os filters - alternate cleaning cycles
Thanks again, Pat

Thats a good plan.
Discus need pristine water conditions all the time!
