A betta for your AC tank! - Northernguy

Default My betta is dying, I think

I bought my betta a bit over a week ago. I cared for him unconditionally--bought him a filtered tank, changed the water a few times, provided him with a heater, etc. He was doing so well. Today, I came home from my classes at night and saw that food pellets were littered all over the gravel, plants, floating in the water--just everywhere. I was STUMPED as to how this happened then learned that there were kids over at our house today so one of them apparently tried "feeding" my fish while I was gone.

My fish was just laying on its side and occasionally swimming around but mostly just inactive. I quickly changed the water and now he's back in the tank but still looking very inactive. He's just staying near the top of the water laying on his side while moving his fins. I have a feeling he is going to die soon and it's breaking my heart. I can't believe this happened. What can I do? Is there anything possible?

You could try feeding it a blanched pea.Skin it first and squish it as you drop it in.
Your betta may just be over full!
    You will know more tomorrow.
    I hope he makes it!

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I can't imagine how angry you must be. Personally I'd like to find the kid and give it a swift kick in the rump. From the sound of it he probably just is a little too full, and a pea might help. I'd keep the tank dark to keep him calm (Not sure if you have lights or not, if you do try keeping them off) and just let him digest and check on him in the morning. Best of luck.

Yeah, try the pea, it's worth a shot. He may be overly full as was said above. You've already changed his water, there's not much more to do. I would put him somewhere when you're away so that this can't happen again. Who was watching these kids and let them do this? I wish you the best of luck with Moose.

Wow, he improved A LOT today. He's swimming around actively and it's like nothing happened! I didn't even get a chance to give him the pea yet. Should I give it regardless? I really hope he's okay.

I would feed the pea. I feed mine peas once a week. Everyone needs their veggies. Hide your food containers.

Glad to hear he's doing well. I would hide the food, or even make a "Please do not feed the fish." sign. Chances are the kid couldn't/wouldn't read it, but hopefully whoever was with the kid might notice it and get the message. That and just spread the word to the people who have access to the house to not feed or let other people feed the fish.

metal food canister, some high gauge wire, a car battery, and a puddle will teach anyone not to feed your fish. Let me know if you need some schematics.
