Thread: Sexing platies

All this time I thought I had two male platies and it shows from this picture that they are indeed females.
Note the picture on the left has a rounded tail (fan shaped) and the picture on the left has a tail that dips inward.
see pictures the male (platy) is on the left and the female platy is on the right.

I thought that the picture on the left is the male, as it has the gonopodium fin.
Also the fish on the right has a large stomach which contains babies.
Am i wrong, on my Endler's the male has the gonopodium fin.

i thought the one on the right is female.
Darn, now i dont know what mine are. They have a big stomach area.

Sexing livebearers is easy. The males have a dingaling (Formally known as the Gonopodium), the females don't! Now when they evolve and start wearing pants, things might be a little more diffucult.

The reason I was even snooping around in Live Bearers today was trying to find out what in heck is taking my elder so long to give birth. I mean she's been huge forever, it seems.
She died within the last half hour. I was watching her just minutes ago and she seemed to be spending more and more time on the bottom. She had no fry so I have to assume she just couldn't have them. Drats. Thought for once I had some free fish.
